How a PTO Shaft Works on a Mower

In a Mower application, the PTO shaft serves as a rotating mechanical conduit between the tractor’s power take-off stub and the implement’s input coupling. The tractor’s PTO output spins at 540E RPM, and this rotational energy passes through a splined connection into the shaft’s first yoke-and-cross-journal assembly. The torque then travels along the telescoping tube section—typically a Star Profile Tube—which accommodates length variation as the implement articulates relative to the tractor. A second universal joint at the implement end re-directs the torque into the Mower’s gearbox or drive mechanism. The Cam Clutch integrated into the shaft assembly acts as a mechanical fuse, disengaging or slipping when torque exceeds safe thresholds to protect expensive drivetrain components.

Installation Guide — PTO Shaft on a Mower

Follow these steps to correctly install a PTO drive shaft on your mower. Proper installation is critical for safe operation and maximum component life.
