Installation Guide — PTO Shaft on a Mower

Follow these steps to correctly install a PTO drive shaft on your mower. Proper installation is critical for safe operation and maximum component life.

Step 1: Safety Preparations

Shut down the tractor completely—engine off, PTO disengaged, keys removed. Engage the parking brake and chock the rear wheels. Put on appropriate PPE including gloves and safety glasses.

Step 2: Verify Shaft Specifications

Step 3: Clean and Lubricate Connection Points

Wipe the tractor PTO stub and Mower input shaft clean with a rag. Apply a thin film of molybdenum disulfide grease to both sets of splines to facilitate smooth engagement and prevent galling.

Raise and lower the Mower through its full range of travel while observing the U-joint angles. Both joints should operate within 0°–25° and should be as equal as possible to minimise vibration.

Step 8: Run-In Test at Low RPM

Start the engine and engage the PTO at the lowest stable RPM. Watch for smooth, vibration-free rotation for at least 60 seconds. Ramp up to working speed, verify stable operation, then disengage and inspect all fittings.
